Here's a 5-step framework of how I will work with you. The context of each area will be customised according to your needs and preferences.
Product providers tactical initiatives
- Product providers can have a influence on market outlook, with levers including product innovation, pricing, marketing, distribution strategy, claims and underwriting, and customer proposition development. Arguably many provider tactical initiatives result in improving competitive position, rather than necessarily growing the overall market.
However, a healthy competitive tension is important for market growth and specific initiatives arguably do make a direct difference when coupled with distributor activity. Notable examples include product changes to support renters, shorter-term Income Protection and improvements to the overall value proposition.
Suppliers to the product providers
- Some of the more innovative suppliers to Protection providers include reinsurers (e.g SCOR, Pacific Life Re etc), technology firms (e.g UnderwriteMe) and value add services (e.g Square Health). These suppliers have introduced innovation to the market and influence both the competitiveness of product providers and in some instances the customer proposition. Particularly relevant is the customer value of virtual GP services at this time offered free by many product providers which has seen increasing customer usage.
Distributors and related market participants
Arguably distributors are the key market participant in being able to grow the overall market. Recent activity will undoubtedly have been impacted by Covid-19 which will negatively impact the short term market outlook. In the longer term however, the pandemic could act as a catalyst for distributor innovation and technology usage, coupled with heightened customer awareness, bringing a positive growth dynamic to the market.
New market entrants
A new market entrant on its own isn’t necessarily going to grow the overall market (e.g Guardian 1821), as opposed to just increasing competition, but a new disruptive entrant could make a difference. AIG have shown what the backing of a large group can do to increasing share and this could be replicated by Scottish Widows if they are set a more ambitious plan by the Lloyds Group. The LV= outcome will be interesting, as it could provide a good platform for a new entrant.
Regulatory change can have a significant impact on market momentum, either for the positive or negative. More impactful change include the Mortgage Market Review, Gender Directive and Solvency II. At this point it is not clear there is any disruptive regulatory change on the agenda, except perhaps the interaction of Universal Credit and the attractiveness of Income Protection for some customers. There are also smaller impacts such as implementation of the PROD rules (notably Value for Money considerations) which could influence provider and distributor activities.
Disruptive market innovation
While the Protection market is not known for truly disruptive change, there is evidently potential here and as other financial services sectors see innovation, arguably it is a question of when not if.
The most interesting opportunities could be related to health and wellbeing and distribution innovation. While there is some limited activity here currently, there is no evidence of short term market disruption.
While in the long term definition used here (next 12-24mths) it is not clear that this disruption might come, but beyond that there is significant potential and new activity should be reviewed closely.
